In this talk, we discuss AI in the larger context of what it means in the context of real applications and its role in the new increasingly digital and digitized world. Most organizations and most areas of science, commercial, and general research believe in the importance of AI, yet most people do not understand what AI is and how to think about it in the context of applications. Successful AI applications have a significant dependence on Machine Learning and Data Science, and these fields depend strongly on the availability of the right data at the right granularity to enable algorithms to work. This creates a dynamic where without data the AI cannot be made to work. We will use some case studies to demonstrate how and why AI can be successful and we conclude with coverage of our approach and philosophy in building the Institute for Experiential AI at Northeastern University and how we aim to address the future AI challenges effectively.
