From Pledges to Practice; Creating a More Inclusive Institution

Dec 9 • 11:45 am - 12:30 pm EST

Description

In June 2020, after the murder of George Floyd, U.S. and global institutions faced an urgent call for actionable steps to confront racism and dismantle systemic structural barriers. Confronting the challenge of bringing greater racial equity and justice to our own institution, members of the Northeastern University community came together to examine what we, as a microcosm of the world, could do to make a difference on our campuses and around the globe. To begin, on June 15, 2020 President Aoun announced a call to action for Northeastern to address the scourge of systemic racism—especially anti-Black discrimination—and advance our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
There’s a reason. For institutions to thrive, they must foster an inclusive climate, one in which every stakeholder feels that they can bring their whole selves into the classroom, laboratory and the workplace. The bold, transformative vision of our new academic plan, “Experience Unleashed,” requires that we prioritize this critical work. As it notes, “To achieve this transformative state, we will start by building a more diverse and inclusive university.”
Senior Vice Provost and Chief Inclusion Officer Dr. Karl Reid provides an update of where we are on this journey, and how the newly minted Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is working collaboratively across the global network to fulfill our commitment to creating more diverse, equitable and inclusive campuses and communities.
