Do Something Transformative: Worldmaking in the Classroom and Beyond
Description
Using the example of a service learning class on race and gender justice, this talk focuses on the importance of experiential learning for a new generation. I discuss how social justice, community engagement, and experiential learning have always been central to the development of both Africana Studies and Black Feminist Studies. I offer observations about how these fields emerged and how they are being re-imagined today by writers, scholars, and activists. The idea of “worldmaking in the classroom and beyond” acknowledges how the field of Africana Studies, which developed out of African American Studies, has always been a tool for advocacy, education, and awareness that is relevant outside of the academy.
